Friends, I want to talk to you today about one of the oldest tricks in the universe—a trick so old it predates the human race, so effective it has never needed an update, and so dangerous that the Bible devotes entire chapters to warning us about it. That trick is deception.

Let me ask you something. Have you ever believed in a cause, or a person, so completely that you reordered your whole life around them? You governed your calendar by their schedule. You measured your convictions by their opinions. You read what they told you to read, gave what they told you to give, and silenced the quiet voice inside you that occasionally whispered, "Something isn't right here." And then—years later—the truth came out. The person you trusted was a fraud. The cause you served was built on sand. And you were left standing in the wreckage, asking the most painful question a human being can ask: "How did I not see this?"

You may remember Leah Remini, the actress who played Carrie Heffernan on The King of Queens. For over thirty years, she gave Scientology her devotion, her family relationships, and millions of dollars—only to discover that the man at the top wasn't a spiritual guide at all. He was, by her own account, a controlling and narcissistic figure motivated by greed and the accumulation of power. She has spoken publicly, in her memoir and elsewhere, about the anger, the betrayal, and the shame she felt realizing she had built her life on a lie.

Friends, that is not just a Hollywood story. That is a human story. That may be your story, or the story of someone you love.

The Source of All Deception

Beloved, the Bible is not vague about where deception comes from. When God Himself walked the earth in the Person of Jesus Christ, He looked into the faces of religious men who thought they had it all figured out, and He told them the truth about their true father - who they really served. He said:

"...You belong to your father, the devil... He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies" (John 8:44, NET).¹

Did you catch that, beloved? When Satan lies, he isn't performing a trick. He isn't putting on an act. He is simply speaking his native tongue. Lying isn't something the devil does—it's something the devil is. It is the sum total of his character. And he's not merely a liar; he is the architect and originator of deception. 

Consider this quote by Pastor William Ramsey in his 1856 work, Spiritualism, a Satanic Delusion, and a Sign of the Times:

“One of the most striking proofs of the personal existence of Satan, which our times afford us, is found in the fact, that he has so influenced the minds of multitudes in reference to his existence and doings, as to make them believe that he does not exist; and that the hosts of Demons or Evil Spirits, over whom Satan presides as Prince, are only the fantasies of the brain, some hallucination of mind.”²

Or, as Charles Baudelaire famously observed, *"The greatest trick the Devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist."*³

Friends, the devil is a great deceiver. Listen to the words the apostle John saw behind the curtain of history. He described him as the "serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan... who deceives the whole world" (Revelation 12:9).⁴ The Greek word used here for "deceives" (planaō) means, properly, to go astray, get off-course, deviate from the correct path, or roam into error.⁵ That's the devil's job. And it’s not just a one-time deal.

If we wanted an expanded translation to capture the full grammatical weight, lexical nuances, and verbal aspects of the Koine Greek text, we would read his operational description as: "The devil is the very one who habitually, continuously, and systematically leads the entire inhabited world off-course into spiritual wandering."

And notice that it's not some of the world. Not merely the ignorant or the uneducated—the whole world. This denotes an overarching institutional and cultural displacement of truth. Satan deceives worldviews, philosophical frameworks, and human systems, nudging them slightly off-center until they are completely misaligned with God's truth.

The apostle Paul—a man who had every reason to know how convincing deception can look—warned us that "Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light" (2 Corinthians 11:14, NKJV).⁶ Paul is not speaking in hypotheticals or poetic metaphors; he is stating an operational reality of the spiritual realm. He is warning us that Satan himself habitually, continuously, and intentionally disguises his outward appearance—clothing himself in a deceptive, superficial masquerade so as to appear as a messenger of radiant spiritual light!

Friends, that should sober us up! The devil never shows up with horns and a pitchfork. He shows up in a tailored suit, behind a pulpit, on a bestseller list, in a movement that promises to change your life, or among polished politicians, Muslim imams, and fine priests. He is, as has often been said, never more dangerous than when he looks most like the truth.

The Anatomy of a Lie—What Paul Actually Said

Now, I want to slow down here, because God has given us a clear warning that lies and deception will become increasingly prevalent in these last days. Tucked beautifully within the Word of God is one of the most vital diagnostic tools He ever gave the church. The apostle Paul writes:

"Evil people and impostors will become worse, deceiving and being deceived" (2 Timothy 3:13, CSB).⁷

On the surface, that might sound like two separate activities happening side by side. But when you look closely at how Paul constructed this sentence in the original language, you find something far more sobering.

1. The Voice of the Words

Notice the grammatical voice of these two descriptions. "Deceiving" (planōntes) is written in what grammarians call the active voice—the deceiver is the one doing the acting, reaching out, manipulating, constructing the lie, and exercising the initiative. But "being deceived" (planōmenoi) is written in the passive voice—meaning the very same person who is doing the deceiving is, at the exact same time, having deception done to them.

Do you see it? Paul isn't describing two different groups of people—the deceivers over here and the deceived over there. He is describing one and the same person, caught in both roles simultaneously! The deceiver is not a mastermind standing safely outside the lie, pulling strings from a distance. He is himself entangled in it. He has believed his own propaganda. He has come to trust the very deception he manufactured. The false teacher who deceives his followers has, in the very same breath, been thoroughly deceived himself. Jesus referred to this exact dynamic as 'the blind leading the blind' (Matthew 15:14).

Think of those who take this to the absolute extreme—those who claim to be Jesus Christ Himself! Remember Jim Jones in Jonestown? Remember David Koresh in Waco? These men didn't just tell lies; they swallowed their own lies whole. They became so thoroughly consumed by their own blasphemous propaganda that they marched themselves—and hundreds of innocent followers—right over the cliff of destruction (and ultimately, straight through the gates of hell, if they were not saved!)

Now, think of that not only on a religious or cultic scale, but fundamentally at the core of some of the political figures in our day—misleading hundreds of thousands (if not millions) of people to act a certain way and adopt their worldview, even if it means resorting to violence to achieve their goals. Think about the combination of the politico-religious Muslim politicians as well, misleading people using the age-old Taqiyya to bring in Sharia law—misleading their followers to believe they are innocent lambs and victims (more on that in our next message).  Friends, that is not the biblical role of government, nor is it how elected officials ought to govern.

2. The Tense of the Words

Second, notice the tense.  “Deceiving and being deceived” describe continuous, ongoing action—not a single event in the past, but a present, unfolding, spiraling process. This isn't "they deceived once and it's over." This is a downward staircase. Every lie told strengthens the liar's grip on his own lie. Every deception practiced on someone else tightens the deceiver's own blindfold. Sin, left unchecked, never remains static—it compounds. Paul isn't taking a snapshot; he's mapping a trajectory.

3. The Form of the Words

Third, notice the form of the words themselves—they function as descriptions of a person's ongoing condition rather than isolated actions. This is who these people have become, not merely what they occasionally do. Deceiving and being deceived have become their operating mode—their default posture toward truth. That's what Paul means earlier in the verse when he says such people "will become worse"—this is a moral progression, a spiritual hardening, a person sinking ever deeper into a swamp of their own making.

An ultra-expanded translation of 2 Timothy 3:13 could read like this:

"...Evil, morally corrupt human beings alongside seductive impostors (masquerading performers) will relentlessly advance toward worse and worse degrees of spiritual decay—actively, habitually leading others off-course into moral wandering (deceiving), while simultaneously trapped in an ongoing, self-inflicted feedback loop of their own spiritual delusion (being continuously deceived)."

So please listen again, beloved, to the sobering application: Satan rarely deceives you directly by standing in your bedroom at night with a pitchfork. Satan uses demons and people—people who are themselves deceived, who sincerely believe the lie they are selling you, and who have walked so far down that staircase that they can no longer distinguish counterfeit currency from the real thing.

It is like someone who has all the scientific evidence at their fingertips proving the earth is round, yet genuinely believes it is flat! That is what made the leadership Leah Remini trusted so effective—and so devastating. That is what makes cult leaders, false teachers, fraudulent politicians, Muslim Imams, “holy” priests, hyper-grace preachers, name-it-and-claim-it preachers, and manipulative movements so convincing across every generation. They are not always cynical actors twirling a mustache behind a curtain. Many of them fully believe what they are telling you. They are simultaneously deceiving and being deceived—and Satan is delighted to use willing, self-deceived vessels to execute his work. He rejoices over the millions of trophies he has accumulated over the years on his satanic mantel, because a sincere liar is far more convincing than an obvious one.

The Great Good News

Now, beloved, I need you to hear me well. If you have committed your life wholeheartedly to the Lordship of Jesus Christ, you do not have to live in fear of the enemy's web of confusion. God has not left us defenseless in a world drowning in delusions. In fact, He has placed at your disposal three of the greatest, most invincible weapons to combat every lie and deception of the adversary:

  1. The Person of Truth: The Lord Jesus Christ Himself, who declared, "I am the way, THE TRUTH, and the life" (John 14:6). Not just a truth, but THE Truth.  Jesus is telling us that He is not merely a teacher of good ideas, but the living, breathing embodiment of God's unshakeable faithfulness—the eternal Anchor who shatters every worldly illusion and anchors our souls in absolute reality.

  2. The Spirit of Truth: The Holy Spirit, of whom Jesus promised, "When He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth" (John 16:13; see also John 14:17). The Holy Spirit isn't an impersonal force sending directions from a distance; He is a living, personal Guide who not only dwells inside you, but takes you by the hand to lead you step-by-step through the wilderness of this world. When life feels confusing and full of noise, you don't have to navigate the map alone—the Spirit of Truth holds your hand and leads you straight into liberating truth.  Because, “...wherever the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom” (2 Corinthians 3:17, NLT)

  3. The Word of Truth: The Holy Scriptures—God’s inspired, infallible revelation—about which Jesus prayed to the Father, "Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth" (John 17:17; see also 2 Timothy 2:15). God’s Word isn't just a collection of inspiring advice or ancient history; it is the absolute, infallible anchor that settles every doubt, frees your body, soul, and spirit, and exposes every lie. When the world tries to sway your convictions, you don't have to guess what is right—you can stand firmly on the truth of Scripture, knowing that God's Word never changes, never fails, and will always keep you safe!

Look at that divine triunity of provision, friend! You have the Person of Truth residing in your heart, the Spirit of Truth guiding your mind, and the Word of Truth anchoring your feet.

With this glorious trinity of truth comes one of the most liberating promises in all of sacred Scripture. Jesus looked at those who believed in Him and said, "And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free" (John 8:32).

When you examine the original language of the New Testament, the Greek verb used here for "shall make you free" isn’t merely a passive release or a temporary reprieve; it denotes a complete, decisive, and legal emancipation. It carries the majestic picture of a captive whose chains are not just unlocked, but shattered to pieces—a person brought out from dark bondage into the brilliant, unrestricted sunlight of full citizenship in God's kingdom.  Hallelujah!

Think of what that means for your daily life, beloved!

  • You are set free from the devil's masterfully woven lies.

  • You are set free from the quiet panic of spiritual deception.

  • You are set free from the seductive traps of false teachers, godless philosophies, and modern cultural ideologies that try to call evil good and good evil—whether it is the tragic cultural lie that precious human life in the womb is disposable (abortion), or the delusion that self-fulfillment comes from rejecting God's moral order.

When you stand on the truth of God’s Word, the fog rolls away. The noise of the culture loses its grip on your heart. You are no longer tossed to and fro by every wind of doctrine, because you are anchored to the Eternal Rock.

The Final Triumph of Truth

And here is the ultimate comfort for every Bible-believing follower of Jesus Christ: the enemy's time is short, and his defeat is absolute.

The book of Revelation pulls back the curtain of eternity and shows us the final page of history. The apostle John writes of the adversary's inescapable doom:

"The devil, who deceived them, was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone where the beast and the false prophet are. And they will be tormented day and night forever and ever" (Revelation 20:10).

Hallelujah! Soon—and I believe in my heart it will be very soon—we are going to see the King of kings in all His glory, and that King is going to cast the deceiver out once and for all. No more lies, no more heartbreak, no more spiritual darkness. Thank You, Jesus!

But until that glorious day arrives, my friends, we must not be naive. The Word of God gives us an unmistakable, crystal-clear warning for the days in which we live: "Evil people and impostors will become worse, deceiving and being deceived" (2 Timothy 3:13).

So I urge you today: test everything against the light of Scripture. Guard your heart. Guard your mind. And remember that the safest place you will ever stand is not in the shadow of a magnetic personality, a popular cultural movement, or a persuasive politician, but squarely in the light of God's unchanging, everlasting Word.

A Personal Call: Do You Have The Truth?

Perhaps you are reading these words today, and as you reflect on your life, you realize with quiet honesty: "I don't have that anchor. I have been wandering. I have been searching for truth in philosophies, in relationships, in careers, in a particular denomination, with a particular religious group, or in self-help, and I feel exhausted by the confusion of this world.  I feel I am being deceived and don’t want to end up in that place of eternal torment!"

My dear friend, if you do not know Jesus Christ, I want to invite you to walk toward the Truth Himself today. Jesus did not come to give you a set of rigid rules or a cold religious system; He came to give you Himself, because He IS the Truth.  And here is a truth He wants you to embrace so you can be set free:  “...whoever comes to Me I will never cast out” (John 6:37).  In other words, “the one who approaches Me—drawing near to Me in faith—I will most certainly not, under any conceivable circumstances, ever drive out into the cold, cast away, or reject into the outside space!”  That’s God’s promise to you.  

You do not have to live another hour under the cloud of spiritual confusion, guilt, or fear. The Bible tells us that "if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved" (Romans 10:9).  Not might be saved, but will be saved.  

Right now, right where you are, you can step out of the darkness and into the liberating truth of God's grace. Turn away from the empty promises of a deceptive world, open your heart to the Lord Jesus Christ, and receive His gift of forgiveness and eternal life. Let the Truth sweep into your soul today, break every chain of deception, and set you truly, gloriously free. The Bible—God's Truth—says, 'EVERYONE WHO CALLS ON THE NAME OF THE LORD WILL BE SAVED' (Romans 10:13, NASB). Heaven’s phones are never busy. Call, and He will answer you and show you great and mighty things that you’ve never known before!" (see Jeremiah 33:3). 

Hallelujah!  Thank God for His Truth!
