It is a well-known fact among those who venture into the deep wilderness that if you are planning to travel into snake-infested territory, you must ensure you are wearing the right kind of protective clothing. Experts call it snake armor. I am talking about heavily layered nylon shirts, thick denim pants, specialized snake chaps, high-top leather Gortex boots, and even Kevlar-reinforced gloves.

This gear functions as total body armor. The purpose is simple: when a venomous pit viper strikes, its deadly fangs bite into the impenetrable defensive layers, causing the venom to be poured out harmlessly on the outside rather than reaching human flesh. If you are traveling through parts of Brazil, which is home to over 400 species of snakes, or Mexico, which harbors 380 varieties, you absolutely want this equipment on hand. And if you ever find yourself in the wilderness of South Africa or Asia, you must watch out for the saw-scaled viper—an aggressive reptile that single-handedly kills nearly 50,000 people every single year.

But spiritually speaking, every single believer on this planet lives and walks in snake-infested territory.

The Word of God pulls back the invisible curtain in Revelation 20:2, explicitly reminding us that our spiritual adversary, the devil, is “that ancient serpent, who is the devil and Satan.”1 He is a subtle, malicious, and predatory foe who wants nothing more than to strike at your life, injecting the deadly venom of fear, doubt, condemnation, and defeat.

Some Christians foolishly believe they are completely immune to his attacks, operating under the dangerous assumption that the enemy cannot touch them. But the Scriptures present a completely different reality. Even the absolute giants of the faith are subject to the unexpected strikes of the serpent.

Yet, I want to assure you today, my friend, that God has you covered. He has you covered in every conceivable way. If you belong to Jesus Christ, you have been equipped with a supernatural security system that outclasses any earthly armor. In fact, you are one spiritually tough individual. By looking at a dramatic, real-time crisis in the life of the Apostle Paul, we can discover why you are—quite literally—one B.A.D. Christian: Blood-bought, Anointed, and Divinely dressed!

1. A Detour by Divine Design

To understand the full scope of this protection, we must look at a remarkable historical account recorded in the book of Acts. The Apostle Paul was en route to Rome as a federal prisoner, packed onto a Roman vessel to stand trial before Caesar. Scripture records that mid-voyage, a catastrophic gale-force storm slammed into the ship, violently tossing the vessel across the Mediterranean Sea and driving them nearly 300 miles off course.2

To the human eye, it looked like an absolute disaster. The crew lost all hope, the ship was systematically torn apart, and they eventually ran aground on a reef, leaving the passengers to swim for their lives through the freezing, turbulent winter waters.

Have you ever been there? Have you ever looked at your circumstances and thought, “God, I am completely off course. Everything has fallen apart, the storm has ruined my plans, and I am stranded”?

Here is the first foundational truth I want you to anchor your soul in today: Sometimes when you believe you are completely off course, you are actually exactly on course for the center of God’s perfect will. The storm didn't surprise God. The broken ship didn't catch heaven off guard. Roman navigation said they were 300 miles away from where they should be, but God’s divine GPS had navigated them precisely to the shores of a tiny island called Malta. There was a hidden purpose for their landing there—a purpose that would reveal the raw power of God to a group of people who had never witnessed it before.

Acts chapter 28 tells us that when the shipwrecked survivors made it safely to the shore, the local islanders showed them extraordinary kindness. Because it was February, freezing cold, and raining, the natives immediately built a massive bonfire right there on the beach to welcome, warm, and dry every single one of the 276 cold, exhausted passengers.3

And this is where we find a fascinating detail about the character of Paul. He was a monumental apostle, a spiritual powerhouse who had raised the dead and planted churches across the known world. Yet, he did not believe himself to be above manual labor. He didn't stand by the fire with his hands folded, thinking, “These hands are far too holy to touch dirty wood.” No! Acts 28:3 tells us that Paul personally went out into the brush and gathered a large armful of sticks to throw on the fire. He got involved. He worked right alongside the people.

Now, remember that snakes are coldblooded creatures. In that chilly, damp winter climate, they become completely stiff and torpid, entering a state of semi-hibernation where they blend in perfectly with dormant brush. To anyone picking them up, a frozen snake looks and feels exactly like another stick. Paul gathered his bundle, completely unaware of what was hidden inside. Everything was fine while the reptile remained cold, but the moment Paul laid those sticks directly onto the roaring, blazing fire, the environment changed.

2. The Fire That Rouses the Enemy

The Bible says that the intense heat of the fire instantly roused the viper out of its torpor. Driven out by the flames, it lunged from the wood and fastened itself directly onto Paul's hand.

Think about the sheer imagery of this moment. The devil absolutely hates fire. He hates spiritual fire. Why? Because according to Revelation 20:10, a lake of fire is his final, eternal destination!4 He cannot stand the heat. And that is exactly why you and I experience sudden, vicious attacks the moment we decide to get serious about our walk with God.

When your heart is cold and your life is comfortable, the serpent leaves you alone. But the moment your heart gets warm, the moment you begin to pray, to serve, and to light a fire for the kingdom of God, the serpent will be driven out by the heat. He attacks you because you are on fire.

Imagine the gasp that went up around that bonfire. Out of all the people huddled on that beach, out of all the pagan sailors and Roman soldiers, the one man who gets struck by a lethal viper is the holy Apostle of God.

The local natives saw the venomous reptile dangling from Paul's hand and immediately began whispering to one another, “This man is undoubtedly a murderer. He may have escaped the wrath of the sea, but divine Justice will not allow him to live.”They instantly assumed he was a hypocrite, being judged for a hidden, wicked past.

But notice Paul’s astonishing, unbothered reaction. He didn't scream in panic. He didn't frantically beg for medical attention. Acts 28:5 simply states that Paul “shook off the creature into the fire and suffered no harm.” Other translations note that he “suffered no evil.” The original Greek word used there is precisely that—evil. He suffered absolutely no evil impact from the bite. The venom entered his system, but it was completely neutralized.

How is this possible? Paul wasn't wearing any specialized snake chaps. He didn't have Kevlar gloves or protective leather boots. How could he stand there completely unaffected by a lethal dose of viper venom?

The answer is simple: He was operating under heaven's ultimate protection plan. He was a B.A.D. Christian!

3. The Anatomy of a "B.A.D." Christian

The Scriptures demonstrate that as a child of the Most High God, your life is reinforced by three supernatural layers of protection that the enemy’s venom cannot penetrate. When you walk out your front door, you are fully covered.

Letter B: You Are Blood-Bought

The entire architecture of this protection goes back to the ancient night of the Passover in Exodus 12. As judgment was coming upon Egypt, God commanded the Israelites to take an innocent, spotless lamb, sacrifice it, and strike its blood upon the horizontal and vertical doorposts of their homes. God gave an ironclad guarantee: “When I see the blood, I will pass over you, and the plague shall not be upon you to destroy you.”6 When the blood was applied, the agent of death was legally blocked from entering the house.

This was the prophetic shadow of a greater reality. Centuries later, John the Baptist pointed at a young Galilean and cried, “Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!”7 Jesus was that flawless, sinless Lamb. He went to the cross of Calvary to shed His pure, innocent blood so that your debt could be paid and your soul secured.

Paul later declared that “Christ, our Passover, was sacrificed for us.”8 It is through His blood that you have received total forgiveness, permanent access to the Father, and unshakeable peace. And Revelation 12:11 reveals the ultimate secret of the believer’s survival: “And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony.”9 The serpent can strike all he wants, but he cannot conquer a life that is legally sealed and Blood-bought by Christ.

Letter A: You Are Anointed

In 1 John 2:27, the Holy Spirit provides an incredible assurance to the everyday believer: “But the anointing which you have received from Him abides in you.”10

In biblical times, an anointing occurred when sacred oil was poured over an individual’s head. It was a tangible, physical symbol of the Holy Spirit resting upon a person. When God calls you to live for Him, He pours out His Holy Spirit to endow you with divine power and purpose. It is the exact same power that came upon young David when Samuel anointed him with oil, transforming a simple shepherd boy into an unstoppable warrior.11

The Bible tells us that “God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him.”12

The Oil of the Olive

In the days of our Lord, olive oil was not simply poured out — it was pressed out. The olive, harvested from ancient groves across the hills of Israel, had to be placed beneath a crushing stone, a heavy millstone that ground it with relentless weight, because the precious oil locked within could only flow when the fruit was broken.

And friend, that is a picture of you.

The anointing of God does not rise to the surface in the comfortable seasons of life. It does not manifest on easy days, in quiet moments of convenience. No — it flows when the weight comes down. When the burden feels unbearable. When the trial seems to have no end in sight. That is precisely the moment God allows something incredible to happen to you.

Isaiah 10:27 tells us that it is the anointing that breaks the yoke. Not your strategy. Not your strength. Not your connections. The anointing. Now understand what a yoke was — it was a wooden beam laid across the neck and shoulders of an ox, binding it, controlling it, forcing it to carry a load it could never put down on its own. And the enemy works the very same way. He places yokes of bondage, yokes of fear, yokes of addiction, yokes of depression, yokes of lack — heavy beams of burden designed to keep you bound, bent low, and going nowhere. But when the anointing flows, it does not merely lighten the load — it destroys the yoke altogether. It snaps what religion could not loosen, what willpower could not remove, what years of striving could not shake free. The anointing is the supernatural power of God that makes the impossible suddenly possible.

And God, in His sovereign wisdom, knows that the only way to release what He has placed inside of you is to allow the crushing to come upon the outside of you.

Do not despise the press, beloved. The weight you are feeling today is not the end of your story — it is the beginning of your anointing flowing. Every hardship, every heartbreak, every heavy season is Heaven's way of drawing out of you what could never have come any other way.

The oil is in you. God is simply applying the stone.

So, when the pressures of life mount, or when the enemy tries to paralyze your mind, you don't have to rely on your own fragile, human strength. The anointing breaks the heavy yokes of the enemy and neutralizes his venom.

Letter D: You Are Divinely Dressed

The spiritual warfare we face is real, but God has not sent us onto the battlefield unprotected. In Ephesians 6, Paul explicitly details the six pieces of specialized, spiritual armor that God has provided for our daily defense. You are Divinely dressed from head to toe:

  • The Belt of Truth: Buckled at the center of your life to expose and dismantle the lies of the father of lies.13
  • The Breastplate of Righteousness: Guarding your heart with the finished work of Christ. When the devil tries to accuse you, your breastplate loudly declares: “Not Guilty!”14
  • The Shoes of the Gospel of Peace: Keeping your feet anchored in divine shalom—an unshakeable inner tranquility that handles the hostile ground of this world.
  • The Shield of Faith: Raised intentionally to instantly extinguish every single fiery dart of doubt, anxiety, and depression that the enemy flings your way.15
  • The Helmet of Salvation: Protecting your thought life and guarding your mind from the enemy's whispers by anchoring you in your identity as a child of God.16
  • The Sword of the Spirit: The powerful, active, offensive weapon of the living Word of God to slash through the cords of darkness.

A Final Word for the Wilderness

My friend, how did the Apostle Paul walk away from a lethal viper strike completely unharmed? It wasn't luck, it wasn't a coincidence, and it wasn't physical stamina. He survived because he was spiritually secured by the blood, dynamically empowered by the anointing, and spiritually wrapped in the heavy armor of Almighty God.

And that identical, ironclad protection belongs to you today.

As you leave your home each morning and step out into a broken, hostile world, you do not have to walk in fear of the serpents. You don't have to cower in panic over what the enemy might try to do to your health, your family, or your mind. You are a Blood-bought, Spirit-anointed, and Divinely dressed child of the King.

When the enemy comes against you and tries to sink his fangs into your circumstances, you can look him dead in the eye and say, “Not today, Satan.” You are dressed to kill, and every demon in hell knows it. Step forward today in the absolute, ironclad assurance that you are a B.A.D. Christian, and your victory is completely guaranteed

Hallelujah!
