Have you ever found yourself wandering through a crowded, multi-level shopping mall, searching for a specific store, only to realize you are completely turned around? You know the store exists, but you simply don’t know how to get there. In that moment of confusion, you stop, look around, and begin searching for —a directory. When you finally find it, your eyes scan the map until you spot that familiar symbol: a bright red star with the words, “You Are Here.” Instantly, your sense of direction is restored. You know where you are, and more importantly, you know how to get to where you need to be.

My friend, in many ways, that is precisely what the Bible is for our lives.

We live in a world filled with noise, confusion, and endless distractions. So many people are searching for purpose, looking for hope, and trying to find what their hearts have longed for all along. But God has not left us to wander aimlessly. He has given us His holy Word—a divine directory of sixty-six inspired books that navigates us into all truth.

When you open the Scriptures, you find more than just ancient history or moral guidance. You find God's definitive star pointing directly to your heart. It cuts through the fog of uncertainty, erases your fears, and anchors your soul with absolute clarity. The Bible meets you in your exact position today and gently reminds you: You are here, you are known, and God has a clear path forward for your life.

Now, here is the amazing thing. God’s Word not only describes who you are as a brand-new creature in Christ Jesus—that you are an adopted, blood-bought child of God, with a completely new spiritual wardrobe—but it tells you that you are someplace now that you will someday be!

You might ask, "Pastor, what on earth are you talking about?"

I am talking about the glorious truth of your present spiritual reality. The Bible’s divine directory points to your heart today and declares something staggering: You are not just living on earth trying to get to heaven. In the mind and economy of God, you are here... and you are there.

Let’s examine what God’s Word reveals about this breathtaking reality through three life-changing observations.

1. The Reality of Your Dual Citizenship

To understand how you can be here and there at the same time, we must look at the Apostle Paul’s foundational declaration to the believers in Philippi.

"For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly await for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ." — Philippians 3:20

Look closely at the original language of Philippians 3:20 and you will see that Paul drops a massive spiritual truth into our hearts. The Greek word Paul uses for citizenship is politeuma (poh-LEE-too-mah), which refers to a commonwealth, a state, or a political home. [1] But notice the verb he pairs with it: hyparchei (hoo-PAR-khay) [2] It is a present-tense verb that means "exists," "is present," or "is a current reality."

Paul does not say, "Our citizenship will someday be in heaven." He says, right now, in this very moment: Our citizenship exists in heaven.

Think about how dual citizenship works in our world today. An individual can hold genuine legal citizenship in two different nations at the exact same time. Their feet may be standing in New Jersey, but their legal status, rights, and passport belong to another homeland.

As a follower of Jesus Christ, you possess a spiritual dual citizenship! Your physical address is on earth, but your spiritual citizenship exists in the very halls of heaven.

Consider how Scripture reinforces this present reality:

  • Ephesians 2:19 declares that you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but "fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God." NOW!

  • Luke 10:20 records the words of Jesus Himself, telling us to rejoice not over temporary spiritual victories, but "because your names are written in heaven."  NOW!

  • Hebrews 12:22 speaks of our present spiritual standing, saying, "But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem..." 

My friend, heaven is not merely a future destination you are hoping to reach; it is a present commonwealth to which you already belong! You are an earthly resident, but you possess a heavenly passport. Glory!!!

2. The Priority of Your Primary Allegiance

While dual citizenship on earth means holding equal status in two nations, our spiritual dual citizenship comes with a clear hierarchy. Earthly citizenship is temporary and real, but heavenly citizenship is ultimate and eternal.

Because your primary citizenship exists in heaven, your life on earth takes on an entirely new purpose. Look at what Paul writes to the believers in Corinth:

"Now then, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were pleading through us…" — 2 Corinthians 5:20

What is an ambassador? An ambassador is a diplomat who physically resides in a foreign land to represent the interests, authority, and voice of their home country.

When you put Philippians 3:20 and 2 Corinthians 5:20 together, a profound biblical portrait emerges: You are a citizen of heaven living on earth, representing your true King while you await His return.

This changes everything about how we walk through this life!

  • When trials come, you can stand secure, knowing that your ultimate home cannot be shaken by the economic or political storms of this world.

  • When loneliness creeps in, you can remember that you are never truly an outcast, for you belong to the household of God.

  • When culture pressures you to compromise, you can stand firm, knowing that your supreme allegiance belongs to King Jesus.

If we were to write out an ultra-expanded rendering of Philippians 3:20 based on the rich Greek text, it would sound like this:

“For the citizenship that truly belongs to us already exists as a present and abiding reality in the heavens; it is not something that will one day become ours, nor something we merely hope to receive after we die. We presently belong to that heavenly commonwealth. Its citizenship is ours now. Its King is our King now. Its rights, privileges, identity, allegiance, and belonging are presently ours in Christ—even while our feet remain upon this earth. And from that heavenly commonwealth, to which we already belong, we are presently and continually, eagerly and expectantly awaiting the arrival of our Savior—the Lord Jesus Christ!”

You do not have to wait until you take your last breath to belong to heaven. Your name is already enrolled in the heavenly ledger. You are an ambassador on foreign soil, carrying the authority, peace, and love of your true home into a hurting world.

3. The Glory of Your Present Worship

Now, allow me to take this truth one step further—into a reality so breathtaking that it will fill your eyes with tears of joy and flood your heart with unshakeable hope.

Not only does your citizenship exist in heaven right now, but in the eternal timeline of Almighty God, you are already standing before His throne in glorious worship!

In the book of Revelation, the Apostle John was caught up in the Spirit and given a window into the reality of heaven. He walked through an open door into paradise and witnessed scenes of unimaginable splendor. Notice how John describes what he saw:

"After these things I looked, and behold, a great multitude which no one could number, of all nations, tribes, peoples, and tongues, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, with palm branches in their hands, and crying out with a loud voice, saying, 'Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!'" — Revelation 7:9–10

Look at that passage again! John did not just see a random assembly of angels; he saw an uncountable crowd of redeemed human beings from every corner of the earth. They were standing in white robes of purity, holding palm branches of victory, and shouting praises to the Lamb of God!

Here is the mystery and the glory of God's timeless perspective: Because God operates outside of earthly time, that crowd John saw in the future is already complete in the mind of God.

Do you know what that means, child of God? In that vast, glorious, triumphant crowd standing before the throne—YOU ARE THERE!

God does not just see you struggling through your workweek, dealing with physical pain, or fighting financial strain. He sees the complete picture! He sees you already wrapped in the white robe of Christ's righteousness. He sees you holding the palm branch of absolute victory. He sees you standing in the presence of your Savior, free from every sorrow, every tear, every sickness, and every sin!

According to the divine directory of Scripture, you have already crossed the finish line—and through Jesus Christ, YOU HAVE WON!

Living in the Light of Your Heavenly Home

If God already sees you standing before His throne in victory, joining billions of saints in everlasting praise, how should that change the way we live right here today?

It means we don't have to wait for heaven to start worshiping like heavenly citizens!

When the troubles of this world weigh heavy on your shoulders, look at the directory of God’s Word. See the star that points to your soul and whispers: You are here... but your real life is hidden with Christ in God. 3

  • Praise Him in the storm, because your victory is already secured!

  • Shout unto God with the voice of triumph, because your name is written in the Lamb’s Book of Life!

  • Lift up your head, because your King is coming, and your heavenly citizenship is an inheritance that can never fade away!

You are not a helpless wanderer lost in the mall of life. You are a blood-bought child of the Living God, an ambassador of the Most High, a citizen of the New Jerusalem, and a victorious worshiper standing before the throne of the Lamb!

May your heart be filled with warmth, your eyes with tears of joy, and your mouth with hallelujahs as you walk in the reality of who—and where—you truly are in Christ Jesus.
